Currency Redesign
For this project, I was tasked with redesigning a country's currency. I was able to choose any country, place, or city fictional or real as long as the currency was able to tell a story. I ended up choosing to redesign the Mexican Peso, because I love Frida Kahlo and I wanted to tell her story. To figure out the colors that I wanted to use and to map out my ideas for this project, I first created a mood board.
This helped me establish the painting I wanted to highlight and the colors that would work for each bill. Because Frida Kahlo was a catalyst in the Mexican Independence movement and she fought for her own independence as well, I knew I also wanted to highlight the history of Mexican Independence, which I accomplished through the use of color and the Mexican crest. I designed three bills, front and back, which are shown below.
When designing currency, it is very important to think about counterfeiting, so I made sure to include some things that would make the bill hard to recreate.
This project really pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I learned a lot from it- like creating my own pattern in photoshop! I think the end result turned out great, and I am very happy that I was able to highlight not only an important Mexican figure, but an important feminist figure as well.
